Today is launch day for this little gem of a book, Catholic Social Teaching for Youth. I was so lucky to be given a *sneak peek* of this awesome new little book and an I am thrilled to be able to recommend it to you all.
This book is one that every Catholic parent is definitely going to want to have on their bookshelf because no longer do you have to chose between being a “social justice Catholic” and a so-called “orthodox Catholic”. In fact, this text perfectly marries the principles of solid Catholic teaching as expressed in Church documents (I have read them) and the age old teachings of the Church as taught by the bishops and apostles (again, I have thoroughly studied both). A major plus of this book is that it has received full ecclesiastical approval and has the imprimatur of the Archbishop of St. Paul and Minneapolis so you can certainly trust its content is true to the Faith.
The genius of the book is that is breaks down the issues of Catholic Social Teaching into 31 categories and discusses them in an age appropriate way. That is not to say that this book holds back; it certainly addresses the seriousness of this issues but it also addresses them with the love and charity necessary to pass on these hard teachings to a new generation.
This book will be one that parents will want to use as a script to speak with their children as questions arise throughout childhood and adolescence rather than as a sit-down, read-through. It was written to be done in conversation with your child rather than for a child to read independently.
Each chapter, unapologetically — yet charitably — discusses the issue at hand, explains the problem as it occurs in the modern world, and shares the truth as expressed by Jesus Christ. The chapters also include a Saint who is an exemplary witness to living out this Catholic Social Teaching in their own lives. The chapters wrap up with “call to action” and discussion points for parents and child.
Along with solid content, there are are charming illustrations of the saints done by Jen Olson. As with any product, I always believe that any book that not only contains solid Catholic content but also is ascetically pleasing is certainly a plus and will make the information much more memorable.
